THE FIRST LIGHT of Friday came and Allyson’s eyes opened quickly. She was eager to make the final leg of their journey. The previous evening, they had traveled north of Palmerton and found a vacant house. The house looked like it hadn’t been lived in for years, and so it was the perfect spot for the night.
Despite Allyson’s initial rejection to the idea, they had chosen the basement as the most ideal place to sleep. “We’ll be able to hear any intruders on these rickety old floorboards,” Marcus had said. “Plus there’s the storm door here, so we can jam it shut from the inside and use it as an emergency exit if need be.”
Fortunately, there wasn’t any need to use the emergency exit—the house went unmolested the entire night.
Marcus was sitting by her side when Allyson sat up and stretched.
“Good morning,” he said, a tired look on his face.
“Do you want to catch some more sleep?” Allyson asked. “You only got a couple hours last night before you took watch.”
“Nah,” he said. “We’re almost to Chris’ place. I’d like to get there sooner than later so we can get settled in—we can rest then.”
“Sounds good,” Allyson said, smiling.
Today was the day they’d get to their destination. The lights had gone out a week ago, and soon, Allyson would be in a safe place for once. All she had to do was wait for Todd to find her note and make the journey to Chris’. Sure, it might be a week or two till he found her but she was sure he would make it. They would all be fine, she told herself over and over. She tried not to allow a pessimistic thought to enter her mind, though that was easier said than done. During her watch duty the previous night, plenty of horrible thoughts haunted her, though she tried as hard as she could to forget them. Better to just stay positive. Better to believe that things would turn out fine.
After they packed their things, they ascended the steps and walked along the dusty floor of what was a living room at one time. She imagined what the place might have looked like when it was occupied. Many memories were created in this space, she knew, and many lives were lived here. Her stomach turned when she thought of the many homes around the nation that would soon look like this house in a few years, though of course, those houses would have furniture in place, pictures on the walls. Like someone had hit the pause button on the lives of the families that had lived there. The houses of innocent people—like the Peters, God rest their souls—would sit as morbid museums filled with the artifacts of a better time. A time that may never return.
Once outside the house, she stared at it for a moment. It reminded her of one of those haunted houses she saw on T.V. shows where mediums—as they were called—would spend a night, attempting to summon spirits.
